Daniel Powell Obituary

Daniel Douglas Powell, 77, passed away at his home in Leroy, Al on January 30, 2024.

Mr. Powell was quite the character. In his younger years, he served in the United States Navy. His duties included diving with and recovery of explosives.

Daniel and Jeanne were married for forty years and together they raised three children, and in so doing, he enjoyed spending time with his family. While he was very compassionate and wore his heart on his sleeve, he maintained his dry wit and his stubbornness.

Mr. Powell was an avid outdoorsman. He was the president of the Black Bear Alliance and a member of the American Wildlife Federation. He loved to hunt and fish and he was an overseer of land. He also received an award for Conservationist of the Year.

Mr. Powell was a faithful Sunday School Teacher and Lay leader at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Leroy, Al.

Daniel loved reading and listening to music. He listened to anything from Chuck Berry to Willie Nelson, and he loved to dance. He once took his children to what was supposed to be The Rolling Stones' farewell tour, back when his children were very young. He was also known to ride around with a dog always named either Snap or Jack on the back of his truck, as that's what he names all of his dogs.

He was known for his witty quotes. If his children had done something wrong, or if the dogs were barking, he would say, "What do you mean?" If anyone would ask him what he was doing, he would always say, "Hard work." He would always ask his children, "What's the word on the street?"  and every ones favorite, "Keep on smiling."

He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Mr. Powell is survived by: his wife, Jeanne Powell; his sons, James (Jessica) VanDee and Jacob (Allison) VanDee; his daughter, Joy (Brandon) Burris; his brother, William Edward (Beth) Powell lll; his sisters, Cornelia Powell and Sallie (Michael) Brown ; his grandchildren, Maggie, Emma, Marley, Hudson, Sarah Beth, Bethel, Kayden, Aria, Daniella and Julia , as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Daniel is preceded in death by: his parents, William Edward Powell ll and Ina E. Powell

A  visitation will be held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Leroy, Al on February 3, 2024 at 1:00 PM, a memorial service to follow at 2:00 PM.
