Sammy Gray Carpenter was born on October 6, 1935 and passed away on September 23, 2019.
He was a native and lifelong resident of the “Carpenter Settlement” in Millry, Alabama. Sammy was a deacon and a dedicated member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Millry, Alabama. He married the love of his life, Mary Lynn Carpenter (Koen), on December 12, 1958. They were married for 58 wonderful years.
He served in the United States National Guard for 9 years as Master SGT. Sammy worked with Thompson Drilling Company before working with Olin Corporation in McIntosh, Alabama for 42 years, where he would eventually retire. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren grow up and play sports from his own Alma Mater, Washington County High School, from which he graduated from in 1955.
Sammy served as President of the Local 2452 Machinist Union of Leroy, Alabama. He served on the board of directors for the formally known Educational Center for Independence Inc., now The Arc of Southwest Alabama. He also served as a Washington County board member for United Way of Southwest Alabama. Sammy was notary of the Washington County Baptist Association located in Chatom, Alabama and he also served on the Washington County Baptist Association advisory committee.
Sammy was a devoted hard worker. He took great pride in a hard day’s work and rarely would take a day to rest. He loved working in his own beautiful yard and the surrounding land, as well as helping the locals schools and ball fields, his church, his family, and anyone he could with any outdoor tasks. His grandchildren and great grandchildren called him "Paw Paw”.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Lynn, his daughter, Karen Elaine Carpenter Jenkins (Steven), grandson, Christian Darrell Williamson (Hannah), granddaughter, Christiana Elaine Williamson, and one great grandson, Roman Alexander Williamson.
Sammy is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Miah Carpenter, his mother, Mary Ann Carpenter (Henson), three brothers, Andrew Jackson “Andy” Carpenter, Nollie Odell Carpenter, and Jerry Coy Carpenter, and two sons, infant son Carpenter (July 16, 1962) and Darrell Gray Carpenter (April 17, 1964 – June 4, 1988).
Services will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, with Visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM with Rev. Ron Pierce and Rev. Leon Parnell officiating. Interment will be held at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with St. Stephens Funeral Home directing.
