Vivian Lankford Dickey, 97, passed away Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Washington County Nursing Home in Chatom, Alabama. Quite a remarkable lady, Mrs. Vivian began a lifetime of nursing and doctoring as a nurse’s aid at Tyndall Air Force Base during World War II. She later got her LPN license and, at the age of 46, received her degree as a Registered Nurse.
Over her nursing career, Mrs. Vivian worked at many hospitals and clinics in the area and retired from Olin as an occupational health nurse. She was one of the first nurses to work in the hospital in Chatom. She rode in the back of ambulances when the ambulances were nothing more than a station wagon, giving care to the patients that wasn’t available otherwise. If anyone in the Wagarville area got sick, Mrs. Vivian was the one who came to check on them and help doctor them back to health.
Another passion of Mrs. Vivian’s was the Wagarville Baptist Church, which she helped to start many years ago. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, taught in Vacation Bible School, and worked in any other activity the church was involved in. She was, as the saying goes, there anytime the doors were open!
She was well-known for her cooking and could sew beautifully. She was instrumental in the founding of the Wagarville Nutrition Center and remained active in its operation for many years, until her health interfered. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
