Anthony "Tony" Armon McClinton, 73, of Jackson, Al, passed away on August 28, 2023 in Mobile Infirmary after a month's long illness. Tony was born on March 30, 1950, in Morgan County Alabama.
As a child, Tony was a huge fan of Mickey Mantle and the New York Yankees, but football was his favorite sport. Anyone who knew Tony, knew that the Alabama Crimson Tide was his team. He attended the first game that Paul "Bear" Bryant ever coached, and from then on, he was die hard Crimson. In his teen years, Tony developed an affinity for muscle cars and finding out how fast he could drive one. He tested the limits with a '55 Chevy, a Mustang, a Barracuda, and his favorite, a Cyclone.
Tony was a member of the Jackson High School Class of 1968 and he lived his entire life in Jackson. He slowed down enough in 1969, to convince his girlfriend, Sandra, to become his wife. So, he did what any normal person that wanted to marry and high school junior would do, and they eloped.
Throughout most of the 1970's, Tony enjoyed seeing 47 states from the window of a Peterbilt, during his days as a long-haul truck driver. In the early 1980's, Tony became the local distributor of the Mobile Press Register and continued in that role along with his wife, Sandra, until the Press discontinued their distribution in 2022. He also distributed the South Alabamian and the Clarke County Democrat. The past few years, Tony has unlocked cars throughout the area as a skilled locksmith.
He enjoyed many years of spirited conversation and football talk with numerous friends at different "coffee shop" spots throughout Jackson. He was a simple man who had not an ounce of pretentiousness. If he wasn't going to a wedding or a funeral, you could find him in some well worn blue jeans. He had numerous cats throughout the years and he was most fond of Fluffy, Gem, Buddy and Bobbi. He enjoyed working on cars and fishing with his friend, Mac.
Tony worked at the art of storytelling like a true craftsman. He could spin a yarn about everything from his exploits in a big rig on a rainy night in Memphis, to how he snuck Sandra out of the house and drove to Georgia to get hitched and all the way to rescuing a damsel in distress in the river that turned out to be not quite what it seemed.
He often said that the thing he was most proud of in his life was his family. He would say, " I must have done something right to have the great family that I have."
He considered McCann's United Methodist Church as his church. During the latter stages of his life, he talked often about his faith and prayer life. He knew the Lord and believed that there was a better place than this cruel world. In his final days, he proclaimed Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
The world became a lot less interesting and the McClinton family will never be the same following August 28, 2023, when Tony took his last breath. He was loved and will be missed!
Tony is survived by his wife, Sandra Bates- McClinton, his son, Eddie (Angela) McClinton, his daughter, Tracy (John) Horton, his grandchildren, Collin (Jordan) Horton, Nick Horton, Shelby Kate McClinton and Addison McClinton, and one great-grandchild, Lily Jane Horton.
Tony is preceded in death by, his Parents, Joe and Miriam McClinton.
