Colette Hasie Chivers was called home on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
Mrs. Chivers was a true woman of God. You could find her at Jackson United Methodist Church every time the doors were open. She was the church's pianist and organist for 26 years. She was musically trained and enjoyed teaching others to play the piano. She had the pleasure of teaching three generations of students what she had been taught. She loved transcribing music for Bluegrass musicians, such as the Sullivan Family. She was also the first woman band major to graduate from Mississippi State University. She was a woman of faith, talent and humor, knowing more "silly" songs and parodies than anyone. She was a band director, singer, guitarist and life long student, always taking classes and lessons to continue learning at whatever stage of life she was in. She loved all kinds of music from every decade, playing everything from Mario Lanza to Lynyrd Skynyrd to the latest pop hits on the radio. If there was a wedding, funeral or graduation in the 80's or 90's in the Jackson/Leroy area, chances are that she or one of her former students was playing music for it.
Mrs. Colette was so young at heart and she enjoyed reading and listening to music. She was also an author and wrote two books of her own. She wrote "A Redneck Goes to Rome" and "A Redneck in the Black Hills". She never met a book that she didn't like. She was a woman of many talents. She was an avid baker, especially making cookies and German chocolate cakes for family and friends. All of her grandchildren loved her cookies. They fondly called her G Ma. She leaves behind a loving family and a huge number of friends. She will be sorely missed by all that loved and knew her.
