Doris Bates Obituary

Doris Mathews Bates went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2020. She was born September 28, 1934 in Jackson, AL. She is preceded in death by parents Nathan and Vivian Dolbear Mathews, husband Henry Bates, brothers Joe and Dale Mathews and sons Steven Brad, Jonathan Brett and Henry Eric (Hank) Bates.

Bates was a lifelong Member of McCanns United Methodist Church. She was quick witted and loved to laugh. She had a humorous personality and was known for her comical phrases. She had an opinion about most things and she did not mind letting you know what it was. She loved her children and grandchildren and devoted her life to making sure her family was cared for.

Through her recent battle with dementia she never lost that humor. She constantly called her family by the endearing term "Sugar" while telling them how much she loved them. She lived by the phrase "I may give out, but I won't give up." She was an avid Alabama football fan and was thrilled by a visit to Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2007 to see Coach Saban.

As her health deteriorated during the past few months, Bates was lovingly taken care of by daughter, Sandra and granddaughter, Melanie.

She is survived by Sandra (Tony) McClinton, grandchildren Tracy (John) Horton, Eddie (Angela) McClinton, Brittany Tarver, Jonathan Tarver, Melanie (Cameron) Conerly, and great grandchildren Collin (Jordan) Horton, Nick Horton, Shelby Kate McClinton, Addison McClinton, Kaci Dale Tarver and Lucas Tarver.
