John Henry McCulley

John Henry McCulley, age 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 1:33 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2026, at Mobile Infirmary, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 4, 1938, in Hawthorne, Alabama, Henry was the son of the late James and Ruth (Allday) McCulley. Though his journey began in Hawthorne, he spent the vast majority of his life in his beloved hometown of Wagarville, Alabama. In recent years, Henry and his devoted wife made their home in Saraland, Alabama. Henry lived a life defined by hard work, dedication to his family, and proud service to his country and community. For most of their 64 years of marriage, he and his wife, Linda, were successful entrepreneurs, operating their own self-employed businesses together. A true public servant at heart, Henry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He later extended his commitment to public service by representing his community in the Alabama Legislature from 1974 through 1978. During his time in office, he was integral in bringing a rest area to Wagarville, introducing vital legislation to recognize and support the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians, and spearheading the legislation and community fundraisers to successfully establish the Vocational Center in Chatom. He also passed the landmark legislation that officially named the new bridge over the Tombigbee River in Jackson, Alabama, the Joe C. McCorquodale Bridge. Outside of his work and public service, he was an avid Alabama football fan, passionately cheering on the Crimson Tide throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Linda (Kirksey) McCulley; his four children, Tekela Bolton, Tracy Archibald and her husband, Allen, Toni McCulley, and John Damon McCulley and his wife, Leighsha; nine grandchildren, Ashley Bolton, Andrea Huff, Coby McIntyre, Charlie McCulley, Dalton McCulley, Caleb McIntyre, Cass McIntyre, Alivia Kim, and Aaron Guy; and ten great-grandchildren, Hayden Herrod, Caiden McIntyre, Oliver McIntyre, Kirby Grace Huff, Shepherd Huff, Leilani Stanow, Liam Henry Stanow, Karter Starr, Callum McIntyre, and Marnie McCulley. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Johnny Kirksey and Jackie Kirksey, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Henry was preceded in death by his father, James McCulley; his mother, Ruth (Allday) McCulley; and his ten siblings, consisting of five brothers and five sisters. His legacy of love, leadership, and service will live on in the hearts of his family and the many lives he touched throughout Alabama.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Wagarville. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place immediately after the service in the Ebenezer Cemetery.
