Mrs. Johnie Gates Dungan passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 8, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of her family. She was cherished deeply by her family and friends, and her absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mrs. Johnie found immense joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Granny." Her home was always filled with laughter, stories, and the loving presence of her loved ones. Granny's gentle spirit and nurturing nature created lasting memories and bonds that will be treasured forever. Known for her warm personality and kindness, Mrs. Johnie was a true person. She enjoyed engaging in conversations with everyone she met, sharing wisdom, laughter, and sometimes simply lending a listening ear. Her genuine interest in others and her friendly demeanor touched the hearts of many in her community. Mrs. Johnie loved listening to country music and was happiest when surrounded by people, whether family, friends, or new acquaintances. Her zest for life and her ability to connect with others made every gathering special. Though her journey on earth has come to an end, Mrs. Johnie Gates Dunagan will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew her. Her love, kindness, and joy will continue to inspire and comfort all those she leaves behind. She will be dearly missed, but her memory will forever be a source of strength and happiness for her loved ones.
She is survived by Daughters, Linda (Tom) Godwin and Brenda (Jimmy) Knight. Sons, Glenn (Janett) Smith and David (Sharon) Smith. Sisters, Betty Gates Bradford and Evalyn Gates Green. and a Host of Grandchildren and Great grandchildren.
Mrs. Dungan is Preceded in death by her Husband Slaughter Dungan, children's Father Tom B. Smith, Parents, Hobson and Lavonya Gates, Brothers, H.P Gates Jr. and Thomas George Gates. Sisters, Lola Reed, Louise Lowery and Ruby Andrews. Grandson, Scott Barton.
A Graveside Service will be Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Amity Baptist Church Cemetery in Whatley, Alabama at 11:00A.M
