Obituary

Margie Louise Brewster Sullivan, 90, peacefully slipped the bonds of Earth and went to be with her Lord Jesus on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, surrounded by family and in an atmosphere of love. Born to Alec and Ruby Brewster, sharecroppers on a cotton farm in Louisiana on January 22, 1933, early life was hard for Mrs. Margie. But at the age of 9, she received Jesus as her Lord and Savior, and told her mother she felt that God was going to use her.

Her father used some of the little profit from the cotton crop to buy her a $12 Montgomery Ward guitar and taught her to play it. His early death grieved young Margie deeply and she asked her mother for permission to travel with Sister Hazel Chain, a lady evangelist from Mt. Olive, Mississippi. They started traveling the Pentecostal revival circuit that stretched from east Texas all the way into Alabama. On one of those trips to Sunflower, Alabama, when she was 14, ‘Sister’ Margie met Enoch Sullivan, and married him in 1949.

Sister Margie joined Bro. Enoch’s father and “many other” family members in ministry, singing, and preaching. When brother Arthur died, Emmett joined the two to continue. Many other family members and friends along the way have contributed to the group. The group traveled the country, to the Grand Ole Opry, and even overseas spreading the gospel of Christ through their Gospel Bluegrass music and preaching, all while raising 5 children and helping with grandchildren. They did this for 61 years, relying on freewill love offerings from the churches to support them and their ministry while never charging the church anything, and were never left stranded for lack of support. They did, however, get paid when they played at festivals

In the early years, they were privileged to work with southern gospel people and later with more of the bluegrass folks. They were the only gospel group inducted into Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Hall of Fame at that time. Over the years, they developed many, many friends in both the gospel and bluegrass worlds. Many different singers and musicians enabled the Sullivans to fulfill their ministry through music and song. The Pastor’s Saints radio and other tv and radio promoters support was crucial throughout the years. Mrs. Margie has said that she would never have believed what the Lord would do through her and Mr. Enoch when she first felt the call to serve.

When not on the road singing and sharing, Mrs. Margie loved to garden, cook, can, and entertain friends and family in her home. A giving, loving person, with a smile that would light up a room, she opened her home to anyone and to all, offering them her special dark roast fine blend coffee. She treated all people the same, somehow making everyone feel special. She loved talking about the Lord, but she not only talked about Him and read her Bible, she lived the Word in a way that anyone who looked at her could see Him shining through her.

Her favorite book of the Bible was 1 Corinthians 13, which ends with “And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
