Peggy Elizabeth Poole Thornton, 80, peacefully left her earthly home on June 8, 2023. She was born in Gilmer, TX, on December 25, 1942, the daughter of Edward “Peddie” Poole and Olita Hill Poole. She was a 1961 graduate of Gilmer High School. She graduated Jones Community College in 1985 with a nursing degree and retired from the State of Alabama as a psychiatric nurse. She lived and worked in Chatom, Alabama, for many years. She later relocated back to her hometown of Gilmer, TX.
Peggy was a longstanding member of Enon Baptist Church until she moved back to Alabama due to worsening health conditions. She loved to travel, and she was passionate about volunteering her time for mission trips. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bobby” Thornton, her parents Edward and Oleta Poole, sister Nancy Poole Austin, brother Tommy Poole, nephew David Adams, and niece Laronda Poole. She is survived by her son Timothy Murrell and daughter-in-law Kaitlin Murrell of Clarksburg, WV; sister Edwinna Loftis (Willis Roble) of Memphis, TN; sister-in-law Brenda Thornton of Chatom, AL; Emily Reed of Mt. Pleasant, TX; six grandchildren, McKenzie Murrell of Gilmer, TX, Emmaline Murrell of Mt. Vernon, TX, Heston Murrell, Maci-Mae Murrell, and Hassell Murrell of Clarksburg, WV; one great-granddaughter, Brookliegh Messick; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
