Vera Nell Roberts, age 89, of Leroy, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023.
Vera was born in Fulton, AL on April 28, 1934. She lived there and in Jackson, AL with her aunt, Annie Bane, before marrying Raymond Percy Roberts (‘Nap’) on July 1, 1953 when she was nineteen. Upon marrying, she and Nap moved into the house that he worked to repurpose for them. It was the first school in Leroy, AL that Nap turned into a home. She spent her days painting the woodwork that Nap carved; they would often take these special handmade pieces to craft shows to sell. She loved bougainvillea plants and would often buy them for herself; or her grandson, Josh, would buy them for her on special occasions. She absolutely loved cats and would sometimes have an abundance of them. Later, after Nap’s passing, her yard would often be filled with kittens, which brought her great joy. Her family has gone on to adopt several of those kittens over the years. But more than flowers and cats, her greatest love in life was her two grandsons, Josh and Jeremy. She took care of them, cooked for them, and would fiercely defend them if necessary. Later in life, she had the same love for her two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Everett.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Percy Roberts, Jr. Her parents, Earl and Juanita Neugent, and her brothers and sisters: Myrtle (‘Sister’), Janice, Judy, Dick, Wayne, Shelton, Mack, and Winston.
She is survived by her only son Tom (Becky) Roberts; two grandchildren, Josh Roberts and Jeremy (Amy) Roberts; and two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Everett Roberts, and also many beloved nieces and nephews.
Services are Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Pine Grove Methodist Church in Leroy, AL. Visitation is at 2 PM. Funeral at is at 3 PM. Interment to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Officiating: Bro. Sammy Taylor with St. Stephens Funeral Home Directing.
