Virgie Walker Obituary

Virgie Carpenter Walker, passed away Sunday morning February 27, 2022 at the age of 91. Virgie was born and raised at her parent’s house in Millry, Alabama. She was a Graduate of Washington County High School. After graduation, she moved to Jackson, Alabama where she went to work as a switchboard operator for the telephone company. She soon met and married the love of her life, Louis "Junior" Walker. Virgie and Junior were married for 66 years. The early years of their marriage were spent moving from south Florida to west Texas following Junior's work in the oil fields. Virgie would make her husband homemade biscuits for breakfast before work and packed his lunch each day. Every afternoon, she would make a fresh pot of coffee and watch for her husband to pull into the driveway where she greeted him with a cup of coffee and the newspaper. They moved to Leroy, Alabama and raised six beautiful children. While her children attended Leroy High School, she was member of the PTO and Band Boosters. Virgie sewed wedding dresses for her girls, cheerleader uniforms, school costumes, and even swimsuits. Virgie was a member of First Baptist Church of Leroy where she was active in Sunday School, VBS, WMU, and VIP's. Virgie was faithful to take her children to church every Sunday where they each developed a relationship with Christ. When asked about her favorite Bible verse she responded that she loved them all. Virgie enjoyed gardening and canning all types of fruits and vegetables. She also enjoyed planting flowers, cooking, sewing and reading books. One of her favorite authors was Billy Graham. She served on the Leroy Beautification Committee because of the love she had for her community. Following her parent’s example, she welcomed everyone into her home where they were offered a seat at her table. She was very giving and was like a mother and grandmother to many children in the community. Virgie will be missed by all.
